On the front of the medal, St Benedict is holding a cross and his rule for monasteries. Next to St Benedict, there is a poisoned cup. When Saint Benedict made the sign of the cross over the cup, it shattered. A jealous enemy had given him this poisoned cup and a loaf of bread that a raven carried away. The words above the cup are: "Crux sancti patris Benedicti". These words mean "The Cross of our holy father Benedict". Words are also surrounding St Benedict: "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur!" These words stand for: "May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death". St Benedict regarded the Benedictines as the patron of a happy death.
On the back of the St Benedict Medal is a cross. The letters C S S M L - N D S M D are on the cross; they stand for the words "Crux sacra sit mihi lux! Nunquam draco sit mihi dux!" These latin words mean: "May the holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my overlord!". At the top of the medal is the word Pax meaning peace. The letters V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B surround the back of the St Benedict medal. They refer to Vade retro satana or "Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas!" These powerful words mean: "Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!"
This medal is used in numerous ways to ward off evil and to provide spiritual protection:
